Let Us Learn Obedience

Hebrews 5:1-10

One of things we as natural human beings don’t like to be told is that we must obey. To obey, for many of us, suggests we are subservient or in some way lesser to the person we are to obey. Indeed the word ‘obey’ has been removed from most wedding vows these days!

It is clear from God’s Word that one of the qualities He requires of us, His people, above many others is obedience (1 Samuel 15:22). In addition to obeying God’s Word first and foremost we are also to obey Our parents (Ephesians 6:1), Government authorities (Titus 3:1), Our employers (Colossians 3:22) and our Church leaders (Hebrews 13:17). We must admit if we are honest that we regularly have difficulty complying with these commands.

In Hebrews 5:8 we are told a stunning thing about our Lord Jesus. We are told that He learned obedience through His sufferings!

At the time of writing this devotional (April 2020) the whole world is going through a period of what feels like unprecedented suffering! We as Christians feel this too. How should we respond?

Let us follow the example of our Lord Jesus and allow the sufferings of this time, or any time, to teach us obedience to God firstly and to further craft us into His image.
